Apple is expected to release its next generation mobile operating system, iOS 7, to the public in a few days as it gears up to host an event on Tuesday where it is expected to unveil two new iPhones. However, not much was known about the status of its desktop OS, OS X Mavericks, which was also showcased at its WWDC event in June along with iOS 7, until recently.
According to a new report by 9to5Mac, Apple plans to release OS X 10.9 Mavericks at the end of October. The website cites people with knowledge of the launch plans as the source for this information and adds that Apple pushed the release of Mavericks to late-October so that it could focus the its software engineering resources on releasing iOS 7 with the new iPhone(s) over the next couple of weeks.
It speculates that the release of Mavericks could coincide with a Mac-focused event where Apple announces new iterations of the Mac Pro, iMac, and MacBook Pro.
AllThingsD, which is a credible source of information related to Apple, is also in agreement with the report and says that it has confirmed that Mavericks will indeed release in October, possibly after its next earnings call, similar to the release dates of OS X Lion in 2011 and OS X Mountain Lion in 2012. Apple's next earnings call is expected to be scheduled on October 24.
Mavericks has been available to developers as a beta after it was unveiled in June. The OS is currently in its seventh developer preview. It brings new features like Finder Tabs, Tags, support for multiple displays, Maps, iBooks, updated Safari browser and other native apps, and iCloud keychain, among others.
